A Still Life Collaboration with Art Director Daniel Hubbard “Five A Day”

In my latest series of images titled "Five a Day," I explore the profound impact of food and drinks on our lives, invoking a sense of nostalgia and cultural connotations.

"One bite, a thousand memories."

Certain foods and drinks have become iconic symbols of specific eras, carrying the memories and emotions associated with them. From the post-war era's "Spam" to the 1970s' prawn cocktails, the 1990s' "Sunny Delight," and the more recent kale and aubergine trends, each item holds a unique place in our collective consciousness. Some have stood the test of time, evolving to cater to changing needs and preferences, like Coca-Cola, Heinz baked beans, Cadbury chocolate, and Walkers crisps.

“Capturing the essence of nostalgia”

Our childhood memories often revolve around the food we consumed and the brands we encountered. Even if we didn't fully comprehend it then, those experiences made lasting impressions, forging deep emotional connections between the food and the moments they represented.

This emotional connection is not a new phenomenon; companies have long understood its power, particularly when targeting children. Consider the chocolate cigarettes that mimicked tobacco branding, leading to a higher likelihood of smoking later in life among those who indulged in them during childhood.

"Food memories are the stories we savor”

Smell, taste, and packaging have an extraordinary ability to transport us back in time, triggering vivid memories and evoking a range of emotions. These memories can be both pleasant and painful, shaped by the circumstances surrounding the food. Yet, if positive, they often lead us to continue choosing these foods throughout our lives, even when other factors like flavour, price, or visual appeal come into play.

Through my exploration of these nostalgic food items, I aim to capture the essence of their enduring significance. These images celebrate the emotions and choices they evoke in consumers, inviting viewers to reconnect with their own food memories.

Join me on this journey down memory lane. Share your experiences and stories. Which iconic foods or brands transport you back in time and stir powerful emotions? Let's engage in a conversation about the profound intersection of food, culture, and memory.
